2011 Pinewood Derby Coming Up!
by Dave Perks - Thursday, 10 February 2011, 06:54 AM

The Pinewood Derby is just around the corner.

We'll be holding this year's derby at Brownsville Elementary on Saturday, February 19, with weigh-in the night before. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, February 18
  • Early set up, registration and weigh-in
  • Time: 6:30-7:30 PM
Saturday, February 19
  • 10:00-11:00 AM - check in
  • 11:15 AM - 2:30PM - Race, awards, clean up
The Pinewood Derby is a great event that the scouts look forward to every year, but it does require a little extra effort to pull it off.

Gary Conley is looking for volunteers to help with various aspects of setting up and running the derby. A list of roles that need to be filled are below. To volunteer, contact Gary at gdc9j@virginia.edu

  • Track Crew - assemble track Friday Feb 18, take down after race
  • Track Keeper - a vital job, this wonderful soul volunteers to store the track 'til next year. Yes, it's time to find the track a new home...
  • Pit Crew - weighs cars and checks in racers. Racers have the option of checking their cars Friday night or Saturday morning.
  • Race Officials - Assist with running the race in several capacities:
    • Announcer – announces heats, calls racers to head to the finish line
    • Data entry – enters racers in the computer, informs announcer of race order (which car in which lane), verifies results of each heat are recorded properly, etc.
    • Pit Crew – move cars from Pit to starting line – carefully
    • Starter – places cars on track, launches each heat
  • Judges – everyone goes home a winner – judges determine awards based on categories such as Scout Spirit, various construction “bests”, and more, set out ribbons, certificates, etc.
  • Refreshment Chair – coordinates/procures snacks, beverages, & food. In the past we’ve picked up pizza from Dominos at a discount and resold by the slice or pie, plus sodas, water, juice, and also had folks donate miscellaneous baked goods.
  • Cleanup – as always, we like to leave the school better than we found, or, barring that, at least get everything back where it was and leave it neat & clean.
If you see a job you feel called to, please let Gary know.

That’s it for now – feel free to volunteer via email to gdc9j@virginia.edu, or call 434-996-7697. With a little help and a lot of enthusiasm, we’ll have the best Pinewood Derby in town!

POOL PARTY CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER
by Eric Amtmann - Wednesday, 18 August 2010, 11:24 AM

PACK 107 – Pool Party 8/18 CANCELLED

I’m going to go ahead and get the word out earlier today instead of waiting until 5:00 to cancel this evening’s Pool Party. It’s pouring rain in downtown C’ville, and the forecast predicts more of the same all afternoon, with 50-60% chance of thunderstorms from 5-6 this evening. Radar confirms a large mass of storm weather in WV predictably heading this way, scheduled to arrive in Crozet after 4.

We are close to our next scheduled Pack event, so we are going to cancel the Pool Party and not reschedule.

However, since our freezer is stocked with 4 gallons of ice cream, the Pack will need lots of help eating it at the upcoming Lake Day!

coming up…

Lake Day

Sun August 29, 12:00-3:00

Lake Day at Mint Springs Games on the beach, and ice cream from the cancelled pool party

CAMPOUT WEATHER UPDATE

Saturday night campout at Sherando is on.

Weather forecast has held steady, so we're going to go for it.

http://www.weather.com/weather/today/USVA0454

PS - my apologies for the spotty communications.  Thursday afternoon's storm took out power to Monticello Avenue online services, which killed both the Pack 107 website and email listserver until sometime approaching midnight Friday.  Hopefully you were reached by telephone.
